Most people know a ‘requiem’ as a piece of music, used to remember those we have left behind. However, its origins can be traced back to the Latin word for rest or peace. These are key tenets of what we do, whether that is peace for the ones we have recently said goodbye to, or for the ones who are grieving.
When you have lost a loved one, you want the administrative process to be as painless and quick as possible… and that’s where we come in.
Requiem Law is a fully SRA-regulated law firm in Wokingham that specialises in estate administration (often simply called ‘probate’) – this is all we do. We don’t dabble in other areas of law, so our knowledge, systems and resources are all tuned to this particular arena of expertise. We are experts in testate estates (where the deceased left a Will) and intestacies (where there is no valid Will). For more information on the process, see our probate page.
All matters are handled personally by our specialist solicitor and Chartered Tax Adviser, Richard (you can read his full profile below). From the initial enquiry, to the final distribution, Richard will be your only point of contact.
All matters are charged on fixed-fee basis, as agreed before any work begins.
Unlike other law firms, we don’t charge on an ongoing, time basis (using ‘estimates’). And we certainly don’t charge more just because the estate is worth more… that’s not fair. We calculate our fees based on complexity only.
Requiem Law does not have costly premises and so we can keep our overheads low. This means we can take on fewer matters (we favour quality of service over quantity) and go that extra mile for every executor, administrator or beneficiary we work for.
All meetings will take place in the comfort of your own home – we typically serve Wokingham and surrounding areas (Henley, Twyford, Crowthorne, Finchampstead, Reading). However, if you would prefer to meet remotely (or you live a little further away from Wokingham) we are happy to do that too.
For a no obligation meeting, call Richard on 0118 40 50 307 or email him at richard@requiemlaw.co.uk. Alternatively, fill out our contact form and Richard will be in touch as soon as he can.
Before becoming a solicitor, Richard spent 12 years as a musician and soldier in the Army. As well as performing music in all its guises, Richard served in Kosovo as part of the NATO peace-keeping forces, working in the field hospital helping landmine victims.
After leaving the Army, Richard qualified as a solicitor in 2013 and spent several years practising general private client law (Wills, trusts, LPAs and probate). During this period he became a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), having passed the Diploma in Trusts and Estates. STEP is the leading global professional body in the private client arena. Full STEP members are experts in inheritance and succession planning – you can read more about that on their website.
Having shown an aptitude for tax, Richard was recruited by Tolley Tax (the country’s leading provider of tax commentary) to be their principal inheritance tax, trusts and estates technical writer.
Around a similar time, Richard became the senior examiner for the STEP Advanced Certificate in Estate Administration, setting the examinations on probate that other practitioners take.
Whilst at Tolley, Richard passed his advanced tax examinations, becoming a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA). This is the highest tax qualification in the UK and means he is a full member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) – you can read more about that on their website.
After leaving Tolley, Richard worked in the City before setting up Requiem Law. This was motivated by a desire to challenge the typical probate business model and offer law-firm expertise at fixed-fee prices.
